Week 4 in Pez Maya- birding, English teaching, spot dives and awesome marine life!

This week we’ve all had the chance to spend at least one morning going birding. Not only is it awesome to see all the birdlife that comes out around Pez Maya in the early hours, but it’s a really nice and chilled out way to start the day. Each morning the birding group picks a transect and then records all the different bird species that are seen and their numbers.

A group of us has also started going to Punta Allen (a nearby local community) to teach English to the primary school children (most of whom only speak Spanish). Its great fun teaching and getting to know the young students although it does pose some challenges for the non-Spanish speaking teacher! But we have all developed games, flash cards and most importantly our drawing skills in the aim of retaining the youngsters´ attention for the full length of the class. It’s a truly rewarding experience, especially when you get to witness how the English vocabulary of the children has grown at the end of just one lesson.

We are now all starting to learn to monitor either fish or coral. Most of us have been achieving 100% on our spot dives, with the next step being monitoring and the collection of recordable data. Divers have also spotted some awesome marine life this week, including a shark sucker (again), some more hawksbill turtles and even a 2m spotted eagle ray!

Next week will be the last week for our 5 weekers. It will be sad to see them go but the 10 weekers are excited to be welcoming the newbies that are set to join us for the second half of the phase.
