This past week was a busy week preparing for Earth Day (Dia de la Tierra) in Punta Allen. Some of us spent a day in the kitchen baking cereal bars and cakes, while others prepared games for the children. Another group was in charge of making costumes and dressing as superheroes (Heroe Ambiental); and making a film to encourage the children of Punta Allen and the rest of the community to recycle, reduce and reuse.
The film aired on Friday when we all took a trip to Punta Allen to support the community and help raise funds for their recycling program. The film was a great success with all of the kids wanting to meet the superheroes (two of our volunteers in disguise).
After the video, the town went off and began collecting rubbish around the town. We managed to collect 450 kg in just two hours! Adults collecting 190kgs in 26 bags and kids 260kgs in 42 bags. At the end we counted 11 bags of plastic, 14 of general items, 2 of cans, 2 of glass and 6 of paper.
The boy and girl who collected the most were awarded the honour of becoming the new Heroe Ambiental and the other children were awarded Policia Ambiental badges for their hard work and continuing efforts towards keeping the town clean. During the day, we had a little “kermesse” (little food market) were we sold the cakes we made and some other yummy Mexican snacks; to raise funds for the project. There were also some games where the children had to separate the rubbish into the right container, football and volleyball tournament and a drawing competition.
All in all, the day ended up being a great success and we all left feeling that we had made a difference and had a positive impact on the community, their recycling program and their ¨green attitude¨.
