It was hard once again to drag myself away from a good weeks diving for TEFL but when you are met at the school by one hundred plus smiles it is worth it. Especially this week, as after fun and games with the primary school kids and stumping the secondary school kids at a question game, they challenged us to a game of ultimate Frisbee. They turned out to be really good, but after a sweaty effort on our part, we pulled it back to win. There is nothing like beating a load of school kids to beef up the old self esteem!
Fun Dive Friday turned into dolphin and shark searching dives. After a last minute change of site, we started one of the best dives I have ever done in perfect conditions. I looked down, put my hand to my head and shouted into my reg, “shark!”. My buddy heard this but by the time he looked it was under a shelf, and the doubt started to creep onto his face, but as we were looking around, this HUGE nurse shark appears. Just incredible.
The rest of this week has gone crazy quick with good conditions all week and monitoring already completed on some of the sites. The local marine life has been trying it’s hardest to make us abort our monitoring mission, with moray eels chewing on lines and turtles coming so close they are nearly head butting us. But we battle on and nothing that will take us off our monitoring transects….. apart from Dolphins!
Yes, some of the lucky amongst us this week have had dolphins turn up on dives to distract us and they have been popping up to play on the journey home so much we are nearly getting used to them. Lately it seems a regular call as boats return to the beach is super excited divers screaming “WE SAW DOLPHINS!”
