Last week TEFL in Mahahual

The final TEFL of the phase had a rough start. Luli was whisked off to Playa Del Carmen on Wednesday, so the main staff coordinator was missing. Then one of the most dedicated TEFL team members, Corwin, fell ill just moments before departure. He would be greatly missed, but with men down, the rest of the group had to commence teaching.

We had some great morning classes with exuberant participation from all the students. After an hour of classroom teaching we finished primary TEFL with some music and sport. The kids are always so excited to participate in all of our classroom and outside activities. It was a very hot muggy day so refreshments before our 11.30 secondary class were most welcome.

A nail biting volley ball game took place at the school before Raph taught the enthused, yet hot, class about water and treatment. We then went to the nearby water treatment plant. An interesting visit which would have been more informative if someone had been there to talk about it!

After lunch, while some ‘TEFLers’ taught extra English classes more vocabulary, some of us took the secondary class snorkeling and it was a sweet reprieve from our blistering hot surroundings!
The evening classes had a smashing turnout with all of the regular locals turning up for more insight into the useful English language and even more useful slang.

It was Raph’s last TEFL night as staff of GVI, after 3 years hard work in this community. He has seen kids arrive in primary school with no English skills and now, thanks to GVI volunteers like us, some of them are in secondary school speaking almost fluently!

It was decided we should do something different for Raph’s last night and that a stellar rendition of the Beatles classic “Here comes the Sun” was to be performed by all attending evening classes. With luck we found that Beatles music might actually be truly universal with many students being familiar with both words and tune. After a rehearsal with Ollie and his guitar, the final result was all we had hoped for and more.

The TEFLers and staff all left the school sleepy, yet happy and content…with “Here comes the Sun” running through our minds all the way back to base.
