¡Viva México!

¡Viva Mexico!
Mexican independence was celebrated over two nights last week, with GVI heading in to Mahahual to join in the festivities.

The first night, Saturday 13th September saw the start of the fiesta with some dancing and boxing between local amateur fighters. The main promenade in town was decorated with key figures of independence and the whole town se
emed to be out to celebrate the occasion.

The main event on Monday 15th, the eve of independence, saw GVI head back in to town to see the highly anticipated folkloric dancers who didn't disappoint. The local youngsters also put on a well-received dance show.

After the entertainment, the mayor took to the stage to oversee the formal proceedings. The national anthem was sung and there was much shou
ting of "viva Mexico"!

Unfortunately very shortly after the proceedings, the celebrations were cut short as a squall blew in from the sea. Everyone ran for shelter and a few gazebos blew away, but the weather did not show signs of improving and a cold and wet GVI returned to base after an enjoyable night in town and happy that the weather had waited until the ceremony was complete.
