MARTI (Mesoamerican REEF Tourism Initiative) is a 5-year long programme lead by Amigos de Sian Ka'an, Conservation International and Reef, aiming to encourage and implement sustainable development and practices in the hotel, cruise ships and other local industries.
This programme has already produced some interesting results, with several hotels reviewing their protocols and delivering workshops to employees on how to reduce their environmental footprint.
Last week saw the leaders from ASK, CI and Reef sign a ground-breaking agreement with the Municipality of Cozumel. This agreement could be a turning point in the way hotels and tourism-related operators develop their strategies and operations, starting to look into a more harmonious development and use if the incredible natural resources that the island of Cozumel has to offer.
We wish MARTI a very happy 3rd anniversary and look forward to seeing the results of this very needed initiative
