Week three has absolutely flown by. The end of week 2 found our entire group in Playa del Carmen where we revelled in air conditioning, free internet, restaurants that served meat and later… a sandy dance floor and phat beats courtesy of the Blue Parrot.
Hangovers and/or tired eyes in tow, on Sunday we stopped by Akumal where we snorkelled with Loggerhead turtles, sting rays and an abundance of fish and coral species (naturally by then we could identify most of them...).
This week has ramped up now that we have two operational boats. Everyone (bar the hut on kitchen duty) is now able to enjoy a double dive day. As a result, we are now steaming through our advanced open water dives and fish and coral spots are edging closer to 100% with every outing.
Scholar Esther and newbie Ari, created a real life game of Cluedo for everyone to play. Suspicion, intrigue and murder have been rife. The murderer is still at large…
Mid week saw drama in the form of a precariously placed turtle nest on the beach. Several volunteers had to relocate the nest to a safer place away from four wheel drives, bumbling tourists and curious fishermen.
This week we were joined by two new staff, Ari from our other base at PG (who has done a swap for two weeks with Shannon), and Jim, new to GVI (a shark guru from the land of Oz).
‘Til next week, adios from Pez Maya.
Soph and Lex
