On Saturday, April 25th, the well known group “Las Mahahualeñas” organized the 3rd Marathon, which isn´t the 42 km race, but many races done in one day. The participants range from the tiny little people(ages 5-6) up to the older and bigger kids (13-15). This year, instead of giving medals for the 1st three places, a trophy was given to 1st place, and ribbons to the 2nd and 3rd place winners, plus a coupon for a free ice cream sponsored by a local restaurant. Water, soda, crisps and lollies were given to all the kids after the races. It was a very exciting event that drew most of the inhabitants of Mahahual.
The Mahahualeñas were not alone in the organization and running of the event, since many locals and residents of Mahahual gave their time to help out, including the Programme Coordinator of Punta Gruesa. Last year GVI also helped out giving out the medals to the winners of the races. We can gather that they didn’t do such a bad job to be invited again. This time we were asked to be at the finish line giving out winning tickets to the first three runners, and being judges if there was a tie, so a tie-breaking race could be organized (only 2 happened, and none for first place). After the trophies were given out and all was said and done, we wished Marilyn, the leader of the Mahahualeñas, farewell, since she was departing to Canada to be with family and friends until October. The race is on to organize the marathon for next year. GVI will sure be there.
