Dive for Earth Day

This 22nd of April we celebrate the Earth Day! As in previous years this type of events has always represented an excellent opportunity for us to contribute raising environmental awareness around the area. This time the volunteers and staff from our two Marine Expeditions will organize environmental education activities inside and outside the water in the nearby towns.

In Punta Gruesa, expedition members have organized various activities in Mahahual town such as a “bubblemaker” in which children from the Primary school discover life underwater, of course due to their age this activity is not done in the sea but in a pool, which is as well fun and educative. For the older ones from Junior High School, the activity will be done in the sea, in which they will be taken to a Discover Scuba Dive and will be shown some of the fabulous coral and fish species underwater, and find out about the importance of this ecosystem. Also, they will have a puppet show and lots of fun activities for tourists and locals reinforcing how to be a more environmentally friendly citizen.

In Pez Maya, expedition members will take the primary school students from Punta Allen to snorkel in the reef and find out about the species underwater and its importance, they will also do sand sculptures contests, a beach clean including games related to waste separation and alternative uses to give to “rubbish”, and many other environmental games in the beach, incuding a treasure hunt! They will finally do a mangrove tour guided by our good friend and Pez Maya carekeeper for more than 15 years Vidal from Amigos de Sian Ka’an who has a lot of knowledge to share with us. It is promising to be a very fun and educative week for the volunteers in Mexico!!
