Earth hour! Lets get dark!

Earth Hour - Logo

From our Regional director desk:

Hi there!

I'm sure most of you already know about Earth Hour and maybe you've been part of it in previous editions.

For those of you who have not heard of it, Earth Hour is an annual event organized by WWF and other organizations to increase awareness of environmental and energy issues.

It's an event that has grown massively and it now has an amazing following and press coverage.
Last year, some of the main cities accross the Globe took part of this event, switching off city lights, monument lighting - with some incredible buildings and landmarks, such as Sydney Harbour Bridge, CN Tower in Toronto, Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, standing in darkness for an hour.

This year, At 8:30 PM on Saturday 26th March 2011, lights will switch off around the globe for Earth Hour and people will commit to actions that go beyond the hour. I personally feel that this is the most important message of the event, the beyond the hour commitment and our daily awareness of this huge issue (and problem too).

When it comes to"switching off" during Earth hour, it's also a symbolic act, and in our cases it won't make much of a difference (as we are powerless most of the time), but again, it's a symbolic act and supports a global initiative.

I guess, with recent events in Japan and the current nuclear energy debate, it's another reason to support this initiative and it's goal of increasing everyone's awareness of the energy issue, and potential crisis, we are heading towards.

Happy Earth Hour
Danny (Latin America Regional Director)

All the GVI staff in Mexico will be attending our staff training workshop in Punta Gruesa, Mahahual and eventhough we use alternative energy there we will turn it off to join the cause! We invite you all to sum up to this initiative and help us spread the word and make people aware of it, why it happens, what can you and your family do not only today but every day!
