Punta Gruesa 102: The Beginning!

We’re back, we’re ready and we’re raring to go! Twenty-one new, fresh-faced volunteers have arrived on base and begun the training process to become coral and fish experts. As you can see, the staff were very excited to meet the new arrivals!

Everyone’s been super busy already, learning fish & coral species (it’s only day 4 and we’ve already had some early passes and near misses on the coral & fish I.D. exams, pretty impressive we reckon), duties (a bread-making craze is slowly sweeping across base) and getting to know how base runs.

There’s also been enough Health & Safety information to keep us all healthy and safe for a good long while, and presentations on everything from aims of our expedition and why we’re here to some of the hazardous creatures you might encounter….we’ll all be shaking our wetsuits to check for scorpions….

On Monday we all got swimming, running and yogaing (?!?) during the first Punta Gruesa Power Hour, providing time for us all to get active and stay fit. It would have been a great way to get everyone going for a day of diving, if only the wind hadn’t rudely stopped our scuba shenanigans! Our refresher dives all went well, in ‘The Blue Hole’ – not the one in Belize, or Egypt, but off shore in between the sea grass. Hopefully the wind will come to its senses and let us go a bit further tomorrow; we’ll let you know  Hasta luego amigos

Enjoy the new phase! My PG 2008 expedition, GVI's 1st at PG base, was an inspiring experience. Such a great program. Just finished 12 weeks with GVI in Laos, a very rare cultural gem. - ron (off to dive in Borneo)
