Earth Day in Mahahual
We decided to celebrate the special day, seeing as we’re marine conservationists, by teaching the children of the Mahahual elementary school about marine biology, keeping the beaches clean, reducing, reusing, recycling, and of course providing lots of games to help them remember the message.
We had spent the week preparing these games and activities, gearing up for the big day. Some games included Sharks and Turtles (a modification of “What time is it Mr. Wolf?” into “Que Hora Es Senor Tiburon?”), a mesh net in which children threw “trash” into pocket openings for “points” (each pocket represented a form of recycling or reusing), an earth puzzle, a band of instruments made from trash (Banda de Basura), and the most popular, an obstacle course involving many “pollutants” and dangerous hazards found in the ocean as a result of man’s influence.
We drove into town to set up our activities before the kids arrived, however, due to this also being the official start of this phases TEFL activities the kids were super excited to see us! Surprisingly they were well behaved despite their energy level. The Mesh net was the first to be bombarded with popularity since the prize for a win was a candy sucker. The "Banda de Basura " also had a regular following and the Shark and Turtles game picked up shortly after. The events of the day were only rivalled by the one past time in the world that no kid can resist... an impromptu soccer (“football”) match in which several GVI members joined in. Children VS GVI children-at-hearts meant we all had a great day which was appreciated by all.
Earth day was a success!
