Thank you Pei-chen for your time here!

Hola, GVI amigos! You might be wondering what we did last weekend here in the beautiful Riviera Maya and the answer is…helping out the annual Turtle Festival in Tulum!!! On the first day of our participation in the Cultural Center of Tulum, we had our own booth set up to raise awareness to the kids about some fun facts about the turtles by having them create their own turtle cookies with green icing (thanks to Georgie’s superb baking skills) as well as lollies. On the other end, Christie was busy painting colorful turtles onto kids’ and adults’ faces. It was such a fun time! We were glad kids enjoyed the activities with us so much.

The next day, the festival was moved to the beach not far away from the ruins- at Playa Pescadores. All the volunteers not only assisted in the logistics that made this event possible but also teamed up to compete with 14 other groups of family in a turtle sand sculpture competition! How exciting! It was awesome to see kids work collaboratively with their parents, let their creativity lead the way to build their own unique turtle sand sculpture. Unfortunately, the volunteer team didn’t win but that also meant the lucky winner could bring back the great prize that GVI offered, such as snorkeling equipment, assortment of toys, environmental brochure of Si’an Kan biosphere…etc.

It was great to see how much people loved what we had prepared for them and being a part of this amazing event! To be honest, I couldn’t find a better way to spend my last weekend here in the community project in Mexico.
