There are a number of special duties on the base that we do on rotation and bird watching is a favourite. Not only does it get you out of breakfast duty or cleaning toilets, it also means you get to see a beautiful sunrise and enjoy the morning with the birds and cicadas as they awake too. Oh, and our friends the mosquitoes.
Armed with binoculars, bird books, and a staff member who actually knows what they’re looking at, we cross regular transect lines to spot and record as many species as we can correctly identify.
Some people prefer the road transect where you see all the mangrove birds like woodpeckers and orioles, others are more for the seaside transects where you get to see bigger birds like the pelicans and frigates. Either way, you’ll definitely learn at least one new bird along the way which makes a change from coral or fish.
