Cleaning Sian ka’an
Last Saturday marked the start of a new exciting project in Sian ka’an Biosphere Reserve (second largest biosphere in Mexico). Leaded by Amigos de Sian Ka’an, local NGO and main GVI partners, the project aims to clean 20 kilometers of beach on a regular basis, collect and report the type of debris and countries of origin, increase local awareness and sum up efforts with other organizations.
Around 100 people including GVI volunteers and staff cleaned more than 20 kilometers of beach on Saturday collecting more than half a ton of debris. The garbage counted more than 45 countries of origin i.e. Haiti, Malaysia, USA, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Colombia, Dominican Republic among many others. This is without a doubt a very ambitious project to which we will continue to be part of. Our weekly beach clean ups wil continue and will add data to this bigger project!
