Week 4 Pez maya-Plympics!

Zombie, Zombie, this is Pez Maya, Pez Maya, do you copy…….

The week started with our trip to Holbox early on Saturday morning. We stayed in a lovely little camp site with amazing showers, which we all took advantage of. After some good food, we ventured to a bar on the beach which made us a little weary for our early start to see the Whale Sharks. The Whale Sharks were amazing, but a little hard to keep up with when we were snorkelling with them. We were also lucky enough to see lots of massive Manta Rays, Flamingos and other birds.

We all enjoyed two dives per day at the beginning of the week, before we ran into a few problems with the compressor. Instead of being lazy and topping up our tans, we dug a new compost hole, cleared the path to the huts, and Simon showed his handy work by making us a sofa. We also had to prepare for the arrival of the children as part of our community work. This involved a presentation on turtles in Spanish, playing games about turtles and conservation, and singing our legendary turtle song. This song has quickly become the official Pez Maya anthem along with Memo`s dance moves. We all enjoyed our morning with the children who seemed really interested in what we had to say, plus they brought some lovely cakes with them which were much appreciated.

After our busy morning, it was time for the first annual Pez Maya Plympics. The Pez Maya Pirates faced the Minjas (Mayan Ninjas) in a battle to end all battles! Everyone participated in a really fun afternoon in which fancy dress was a must. Particularly funny was the mask snorkel and fin relay race where you could only run forward and we all had to share the same equipment. The last event of the day saw two girls and two boys from each team getting up close and personal with some Palm trees. The aim of this event was to stay up in the tree hugging it for the longest time. The participants determination was apparent when they all came off with scrapes and bruises on their arms and legs. A couple more events have still to be completed but currently the Minjas are in the lead, but all is still to play for!

Another weekend outing saw everyone heading to cenotes either to dive or to snorkel. The water was much colder to what we have been used to the past few weeks, but it was amazingly clear and a brilliant experience. The divers were lucky enough to be filmed during their dive and have photos taken to remember their day. After our long day, the staff treated us to some yummy food for our zombie themed party. Everyone’s artistic flares surfaced to create some amazing outfits, but we are almost out of red paint as we all used it for fake blood. Scary!!!

Hopefully there will be more diving in the coming week, which unfortunately is the 5 weekers last week on base. The expedition is going far too quickly for us all and Pez Maya has definitely become our home!
