Shark Tale in Punta Gruesa

Pez Maya has appeared to have had the lions share of Mega Fauna in the past, but Punta Gruesa is slowly but surely stacking up the species. The Dolphin sightings of 091 were frequent and exciting, the Grouper mating season bought big Black Groupers to our doorstep, Turtles of all shapes and sizes are making appearances, rays glide past on many dives including Southern Stingrays, Yellow Rays and the stunning Spotted Eagle Ray for the lucky few, and now we have a new shark to join the Nurse sharks seen recently on our new site, Los Gorditos (The Fatties or Chubbies, named after the plethora of large Chubs found there).

Hidden under one of the ledges of LC (Las Cavernas or The Caverns) with a ‘don’t mess with me, I have teeth’ look on his face, a 2m Caribbean Reef Shark was checking out our turf and making use of the tasty treats on offer. Luckily a camera was on hand, but the face gave the warning to make use of the zoom function! He wasn’t overly bothered by our presence, just got on with business but caused a great deal of excitement amongst the onlookers. A second wave of hopefulls was sent on the next dive to see if he was still there, but unlike Nurse sharks that hang around sleeping on the seabed for hours, Reef sharks are more active therefore he was not where they left him. Hopefully he will be around for some more lucky divers to catch a glimpse of on another occasion.
