When the Wind Blows – Pez Maya week 4
This is not to say that we’ve been lying around in hammocks enjoying the sunshine. Well, not all the time anyway… We now have three beautifully scrubbed boats, gleaming like the gleamiest gleamy things from Gleamland, filled with gleamy joy (and now a fine layer of sand, thanks to the excessive, unrelenting, never ending, continuous, 24 hour, CONSTANT howling wind). We have shiny white walls where there were once less shiny blue walls. We have a wonky coat rack; you have to put on and remove coats in pairs to keep it standing – fine craftsmanship Sarah! There are fewer creepy vines creeping around the wetsuit enclosure, thanks to the boys who took their no-dive frustration out with machetes. We have also realised that it is impossible to truly appreciate how much plastic there is in the world until you’ve picked it up off a beach. All of it. Reduce, reuse and recycle guys, it’s the future!
Studies, as always, have continued – although we think that the staff may have to start inventing lectures for us if the excessive, unrelenting, never ending, continuous, 24 hour, CONSTANT howling wind continues. We are now well versed in the reproductive cycle of a manatee and we took a brief dip into the expansive subject of oceanography (do you see what we did there? The art of blogging has never been finer…). Theory work for EFR, Rescue Diver and Divemaster certifications have also continued; many people are now theoretical Rescue Divers, unfortunately we’re not sure they’d be any help actually in the ocean, and at this rate we may never find out!
And so (insert fanfare) to the Saturday night extravaganza! It was the last weekend with the first lot of five-weekers and we are entering Jax’s birthday week so to celebrate we had a letter J fancy dress party with a Mexican twist. Preparations were lengthy, much effort was made and we think you’ll be impressed with the results. Marvel at the Jigsaw of Mexico! Be amazed by the Jeringa (Spanish for syringe)! Wonder at the Mexican Jew! Laugh hysterically at James Bond in his tiny, tiny Corona shorts saving the day (specifically Thursday, or Jueves en Espanol)!
Incidentally if there was a prize for the best costume it would have gone to the jigsaw of Mexico. Because we’re choosing. And it was our costume. And it rocked. Oh, and by the way, if anyone sees the mattress which is now missing from hut one can they please return it? We sort of need it for the next five-weekers…
Speaking of which, we must go as preparations have begun for the new arrivals – due to get here on Friday. We might even sweep the huts!
Until next time then, manten la fe y serás grande (and please pray to whichever god you choose for the cessation of the excessive, unrelenting, never ending, continuous, 24 hour, CONSTANT howling wind!)
