Dolphins in the lagoon!!
Unlike Pez Maya, the lagoon outside Punta Gruesa is not such a good option for dives when the weather is making the pass un-passable. The maximum depth we have found is approximately 2 metres, and with swell and waves, makes for an interesting dive! However, it still makes a home for an impressive array of creatures, including spotted eagle rays, yellow rays, barracuda, nudibranchs, fireworms, scorpionfish, octopuses and various fish species that are very uncommon on the outer reef. Now, to add to the awesome biodiversity present in such shallow, turbid waters, today, a pair of dolphins were spotted frolicking in the shallows behind the reef, close to the buoys laid out for swimmers in front of the base. Unfortunately, they were too zippy to allow for photos, but the image shows the excited EM’s and staff alike on the beach watching the show.
