Record-setting turn out of students for first English lesson

The TEFL programme resumed activities in Mahahual this past week, with an overwhelming response from the community. This phase marks the change of it’s original format from two days a week to only Thursday. Apparently word got around, as over 60 people turned up for our 6.30 to 8pm class, and teachers who were expecting 5 to 6 students, ended up with 15 to 20! For most of our EM’s it was their first time teaching, but in the end everyone really enjoyed themselves and saw the benefit and value of this activity.

“Despite being a long day and tiring, the fact that people are interested in learning both in the schools (Primary and Secondary) and English is motivating enough. As I teach people, I learn a lot, about general information and about myself.”

Erika Gress, National Scholarship Programme benefactor.

“Enjoyable and worthwhile. This is the biggest contact with the community and this is important for GVI. People were very happy and the turn out was amazing. Our monitoring activity is important, but without the community, our work means little without letting them know what we are doing.”

Gordon Giesbrecht, Expedition Member from Canada.
