Coral Reef clean up in GVI Pez Maya as the Debris Project aware month of actions!!

As we have posted a few weeks ago we have completed many beach clean ups since 2003, here in Pez Maya, Sian Ka’an Biosphere reserve Mexico, we follow Ocean conservancy format and record it in their format. Now we started recording it in the Project aware site! Our methodology for  beach clean ups covers close to 2 kilometers is a course of 12 weeks where we collect on average 700 kg of garbage, of which only 65 kg is recyclable.

On Friday 14th September volunteers and staff from GVI Pez maya base sent out 4 boats to 4 different sites in oder to collect as much debris as possible as part of the Project aware month of debris initiative.  We aimed to cover close to 4 kilometers of reef in 160 minutes of dive time at depths ranging from 9 meters to 3 meters.  The dive sites that were cleaned were: Nube, Hogs Head, The Gardens, and Oasis.

We also decided to branch out from our beach and travel to the camping sites and road that surrounds our base.  We went to three of the campsites that are south of our base and walk the road that runs north to the bridge.  The total distance was less than one kilometer of land ... but the amount of trash piled up high!

On the other hand we are very glad to report that not much trash was found in the coral reef sites in this area, 10 different items, 2 shoes and a bunch of plastic bags weighing nearly 1 kg were removed from the dive site “Oasis”. An old mask, snorkel and a large broken piece of plastic were removed from the site “the Gardens” weighing approximately 0.75 kg.  No more debris was found nor collected from any other site.

The data was entered to the project aware site and we are aming to enter much more data!
