Mexico Mayan Challenge, a big success!!

At GVI, as you know staff and volunteers work very hard to make a difference which doesn't stop us from having fun! Prove of it is our recent participation on the Mayan challenge which took place on the 28, 29 and 30 of May. Nine brave volunteers and staff members took the quest of cycling 135 kilometers under a very warm and humid Yucatan during three days; and we all made it safe and sound to the end! The challenge was not only physical but it also involved raising the necessary funds to help continue building the recycling center in Punta Allen, a fishing village inside Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve, and to support the ongoing Amigos de Sian Ka’an beach clean up project. Most of the people achieved the target of 500 USD and some of them exceeded it which is really wonderful!!

In total we raised more than 3000 USD that will be divided between those projects, which will make a big difference too! The hard cycling and fund raising work came with some reward as the route included 9 amazing cenotes, which we had the opportunity to explore and refresh in their cold yet refreshing water.  We also had the opportunity to know more about the Mayan culture by eating in some Mayan houses and visiting Ek balam ruins. After 135kms, more than 1000 steps up and down and more than 3000 USD raised it was fun and a really rewarding experience!
