Week 5 in Pez Maya– Face paint, People passing through and Goodbyes

This week started in everyone’s favourite way, with a party. Since we are getting close to the end of the first five weeks, and thus losing Tegan and Niki, we had a big farewell party in the theme of Mardi Gras and face paint. People were really excited and ended up with wonderful pieces of art on their faces, so needless to say everyone looked great.

Arriving just in time for the Saturday party was James, the head of the Australian branch of GVI and a guest on base until Tuesday. We were worried that our party antics might scare him off, but he joined right in with us and seemed to have a lot of fun. Another guest this week was Steph, who joined us from Boston. They both introduced us to the ambassador program, which you can find out more about by emailing to ambassador@gviworld.com

Diving this week has been great with people both starting practice monitoring and monitoring, and starting their Rescue Diver training. PADI sure know how to make those videos! Over the past week Jaen, Jessie and Maja have been working through blood, sweat and tears to create a brand new monitoring board. This shows our progress all the way from coral/fish tests trough spots and practice monitoring to actual monitoring. It is a very pretty board and makes a nice decoration to our communal area as well as being very informative (written by Crouz, I promise).

Since the weather has been so kind this week, that higher force that really want to keep us on land decided to make Vision’s engine break down, leaving us with just one boat on Tuesday and Wednesday. Luckily, we managed to go out in six waves on Wednesday, so some people could still get two dives and the rest of us at least one. Come Thursday the engine was up and running again, thanks to magical Stu who figured out what was wrong and sent his elves up to Playa to get spare parts.

On Monday, we had yet another arrival on base. This time it was an old face reappearing – Jax! Jax was a volunteer this phase last year and has been a scholar for three phases. Now she works down in Mahahual and visited us for a couple of days as a staff member because she missed Pez Maya oh so badly. At least that is what we’re assuming. Anyway, she has been a little firework of energy and we will miss her as she leaves today (Thursday). Actually, Jax was not the only homecoming this week, as Erika returned! Glad to see you have come back to base!

On the subject of Jax, it was her birthday on Wednesday! We also have two more birthdays this week, Jessie’s is today (Thursday) and Jay’s is on Saturday. Lots of birthday fun this weekend in other words, which by the way is our long weekend! This means that most of us will leave base on Friday to head for Playa del Carmen whilst the new five-week people settle in.

As said before, we are reaching the end of the first half of the phase. This means that we mush say goodbye to our special friends Niki and Tegan. We can’t describe how heartbreaking it is to say that this is their actual last day, but we can only hope that they will want to keep in touch with us (and, of course, keep reading the blog)!

So ahead of us lies a weekend in Playa, a heartbreaking farewell and an exciting meeting with the new people. Can you wait?

Peace and love, Crouz & Maja
