Earth Hour, 28th March 2009
Last year on the 31st of March, GVI Mexico joined the Earth Hour initiative turning off the lights for one hour as a way to deliver a powerful message about the need of action on global warming.
This year, GVI Mexico together with our local partners, Amigos de Sian Ka’an, will be joining this global movement again and invite everybody, specially all our former, current and future expedition members and staff to be part of it.
Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney Australia, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Coliseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.
In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. On March 28 you can VOTE EARTH by switching off your lights for one hour. Or you can vote global warming by leaving your lights on (http://www.earthhour.org/) .
The results of the election will presented at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.
