VIP visit to Pez Maya
This week we have been very fortunate to host a very important visit for Pez Maya.
Mr Smale was, 20 ish years ago, one of the main financial donors when Pez Maya was purchased by Amigos de Sian Ka'an and The Nature Conservancy. Thanks to him, and many other donors, Pez Maya has been kept as intact as possible and is now base to our research expedition.
After spending some time sharing some of his memories of Pez Maya 20 years ago, Mr Smale unveiled a plaque to commemorate this day and as a small thank you gesture for his contribution to preserve Pez Maya the way we all love it. The plaque, in Mayan, Spanish and English read:
"With deepest Thanks to the Smale Family for their love and support to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve"
Mr Smale, in return, thanked Amigos de Sian Ka'an and GVI for the conservation and research worked carried out in Pez Maya and expressed his wish that Pez Maya stays as it currently is for many years.
Mr Smale's nephews planted a Geiger Tree (local tree) as part of a new interpretative trail Amigos de Sian Ka'an and GVI are designing. This trail will feature native plant species, important for the conservation on the coastal dune system and vital for the survival of many of the animal species resident in Pez Maya.
Without Mr Smale's family support, Pez Maya would not be what it is today, and we all thank him for his noble support. We hope to see them again in this beautiful place, and with some more time, take them to see our reefs too!
