Triathlon Training Time!

This week started very windy as usual! However, this did not stop us from diving. On Monday we visited the extremely stunning Casa Cenote, where freshwater meets saltwater and the mangroves create a rich habitat in which Moray Eels, Crocodiles, Fish, Manatee’s and many other species live. Diving and snorkelling here was a truly breath-taking experience, the light streaming through the mangrove roots is captivating, and the abundance of life, combined with the beautiful caves and

swim throughs is an experience which should defiantly not be missed. The Yucatan Peninsula has no overland running water all the freshwater runs below the ground thus it is riddled with many, many Cenotes, all of which are incredibly unique and waiting to be explored.

A very productive week has been had on base with the compost pit finished and the two new showers nearing completion. Also the recycling centre in Punta Allen is ensuring the bright orange tricycle is put to good use. It is making the job of moving recycling far more efficient and less time-consuming for Angel. The community is very excited about the prospect of having enough money in order to improve the centre. The photos show the half built storage units, which hopefully using the funds raised from the Triathlon, will be transformed.

Best of luck to the Pez Maya Triathletes with training and fundraising. Peyton, Erin and Yoshi are competing individually and we’re also entering two teams. The volunteer team consisting of Jon, Shelley and Paul will be challenging the staff team, Rhu, Robbie and Tristan! The link to the donation page is below; any donation large or small would be much appreciated by all the Triathletes and the community of Punta Allen. The funds we raise will go towards expanding and refining Punta Allen’s recycling centre so that it does even more for the community and the Sian Ka’an biosphere.

Finally, this week is also ending on a bit of a sad note. We’re saying goodbye to Claudia, Jennifer and
Julian who are leaving before time, to continue with their amazing adventures. Claudia, we will miss your infectious laugh and spirit and wish you all the best on your GVI packed year ahead. We will definitely be following your adventures on the blog. Jen and Jules, base is not going to know what to do without you but we hope you think of us often as you travel through Mexico and then go back to your lives in the real world.
