Diving, pez maya olympic games, Rina experience in Pez Maya

The week`s fantastic weather saw a full six days of diving and also all the volunteers completing their advanced open water certification. As the celebrations ensued, we continued on with working on our coral and fish spotting in hopes to begin our monitoring duties soon. The sunlight and fairly calm seas were a gift after a rough and rainy past week. We took full advantage of their presence and were all happy to have logged nearly 10 dives in one week. After Saturday’s fun dive was over, volunteers and staff scattered with some venturing to the ruins at Coba spending the day biking and climbing the structures, while others wandered to Akumal to snorkel with the resident turtles and spend the day relaxing in the sun.

Then before we knew it it was Monday again and we were back in the water, but only for a brief moment. We heard news of Hurricane Rina who was due a visit at Base that Thursday which sadly meant non-diving weather, however perfect conditions for the Pez Maya Olympic Games. All huts put in creativity and effort but staff came out victorious.

On Wednesday it became official that we would evacuate base for the arrival of Rina so we packed every last bit of base up and headed for Tulum where we spent two nights playing cards by candlelight and eating as much hurricane food as possible. Thankfully Rina came and went in our sleep and we were able to return to base by Friday afternoon where damage was minimal.
We are happy to be back and hope that the weather continues to improve for many diving days ahead.

Adios.
