GVI team attends the VI Mexican Coral Reef Conference

Three excited staff members undertook the long trip across Mexico to Ensenada, Baja California last Tuesday to present data at the VI Congreso Mexicano de Arrecifes de Coral, and to rub shoulders with some of the bigwigs of Mexican, and international, coral reef research.

The 3 day conference saw a diverse set of posters and presentations ranging from topics such as overfishing to incredibly complicated coral genetics!

Pez Maya Base Manager Vicki Bush presented her poster “Evaluation of Reef Resilience on the North Coast of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve” (created with Lois Moriel-Robles from our partners Amigos de Sian Ka’an), whilst Stuart Fulton (former base manager) and Country Director Lluvia Soto-Jimenez presented their work “Distribution, Diet and Management of the Lionfish, Pterois sp. in Pez Maya and Punta Gruesa, Quintana Roo, Mexico”. Both were well received by the attending delegates.

The trip wasn’t without time to let their hair down though – the closing ceremony for the event was held at a vineyard located in Baja California’s prime wine producing region and included a tour of the vineyard and, of course, a few free samples!
