Exploring around and deep dives on week 4 in Pez Maya-

Tomorrow marks the end of our 4th week on base. The time has absolutely flown and although there are many home comforts we are looking forward to getting back to, there are many things about life on base we know we will miss… the people (definite life long friends have been made), the diving, not having to wear shoes, or clothes really for that matter, and having a slice of the Caribbean coast as our front yard.

However, we still have this weekend to take in some sights (some of us are diving a cenote and others are exploring a wreck up the coast), as well as a full week of diving and monitoring next week.

Last weekend saw another festive Saturday night off. A bunch of us braved the road and trekked up to Playa with the unfilled intention of visiting the ruins at Coba on Sunday. Pez Maya ended up rocking out to the wee hours with those on base enjoying a well earned unwind and a trip to Tulum the next day.

Unfortunately one of our crew, Luke the Texas Ranger, had to leave our shores and return home due to ear problems which prevented him from diving. It hasn’t been the same without him y’all should know.

Importantly, we are all now certified Advanced Open Water Divers! Consensus for the favourite adventure dive of our course was definitely the deep dive. Several of our group felt the effects of nitrogen narcosis (or got ‘narked’ as we in the biz say. Regina the Rocket giggled like a 12 year old school girl for her entire trip and Soph while slightly giddy tried to pet a passing fish and stick her head in a sponge (!?).

Today our slice of paradise was threatened by storm clouds then battered by strong winds which prevented us from diving. Instead we had monitoring lectures which we will put into practice from tomorrow, as well as a talk from Martin and Mark on threats to the reef and a movie arvo to finish off the day. No rest for the wicked (well not too much anyway).

Spot you next week.

Soph and Lex
