A stormy week in PG!

Storms, storms, storms... that has been the mantra of this week. Nevertheless morale remained high even though we were unable to dive for a few consecutive days. Despite poor weather there are some positive, for instance we are able to sleep until 7am! That extra hour of sleep is welcomed by everyone. The day starts a little later and instead of diving the days were filled with lectures and beach volleyball. The biggest negative about the rain is that the mosquitoes spawn in great quantities faster than ever with the goal to make every volunteer as uncomfortable as possible. They become completely relentless, warriors I say biting you through your clothing, it seems as though you cant escape them. But sure enough, the wind picks back up and the mosquitoes are gone once again.

A big highlight of this week has been the dissection of the lionfish. Lionfish are an invasive species that eat everything on the reef. Due to the fact they have no natural predators in the area they are free to eat and breed continuously eating innumerable amounts of juvenile fish. They are a serious problem in the Caribbean and as a result they are hunted to preserve species and health of the coral reef. After catching one of these monsters, it was dissected and a lesson was given in depth about the fish and how it has become a problem. Life on base these days has slowed down a bit. They weather is beginning to pick up again so diving is back on the agenda. I'm excited to get back in the water.

Until next week,

Nathan
