Pez Maya and Turtle Festival 2010!

Another week has passed at Pez Maya and we have lots to report. The main event has to be, Turtle Fest!

Every year at the end of the nesting season, the people of Tulum and GVI get together and celebrate. So, on Friday we started the party in the town of Tulum. The volunteers had been busy all week making fun turtle related games for the children to play and they were a definite success. It was also a great opportunity for GVI to meet with the people of the town and inform them of the work we’re doing in the local area. It was a really fun evening for everyone, and the people who came to support were very keen to get involved in the various projects.

On Saturday we did a beach clean at Playa Pescadores. This beach is truly stunning with white sand and as you look to the north a Mayan Ruin sits on top of the cliffs. After the clean we continued with the fun and games, all organised by GVI. We brought the volunteer games again for the children, there was volley ball and a sand sculpting competition. It brings great pleasure to report that the “Channel 5 News Team” of Pez Maya, won first place! Ron Burgundy (James), Veronica Corningstone (Caz) and Brick (Harry) stole the show with our take on the Cistene Chapel, using a turtle and mermaid.

Thanks to everyone involved in the festival, the weekend was great fun and a real success.

On Sunday and handful of lucky people were able to visit Akumal and swim with turtles. Everyone who went said it was an incredible experience and one they’ll never forget. Unfortunately we don’t have any pictures to show you. However, we’re planning another trip there during our long weekend and I shall make sure to take my camera.
