TEFL in Mahahual

Every Tuesday we jostle for the coveted spots of a trip to nearby Mahahual to teach at one of our English as a Foreign Language sessions in the community. We hold three groups a day, one at lunchtime and two in the evening at a local café. Our first few sessions started off slowly, but we made some posters for around town and spread the word via taxi drivers and community groups to increase participant numbers.

This Tuesday evening Tammy, Kaz, Allyn and Dianne were escorted by Erin and Rach to lead the evening sessions. We had five local children come in to brush up on their alphabet and vocab skills and we made good use of our flash cards and teaching resources.

We found it particularly challenging (and amusing) trying to teach the kids to say the letter V (there is no V sound in Mexico, it’s pronounced as a B) but we had lots of laughs and high fives and we all came away agreeing it was one of the most rewarding things we had done.
