WHEN THE VOLUNTEERS ARE AWAY WHAT DO THE STAFF DO?! PLAY!... (With boat engines)

This weekend was the ‘long weekend’ for the volunteers, meaning that they get 3 days off to go and explore some more of Mexico, or in some cases Belize! We’ll let them tell you how much fun they had when they return…

Meanwhile back at the ranch, the staff of Punta Gruesa welcomed the new 5 week volunteers, Kaz and Christian. They have had the luxury of a peaceful and quiet base for a couple of days. However they have been busy learning the ins and outs of base life, health and safety, radio and compressor use and doing swim tests!

Whilst not teaching something exciting to Kaz and Christian, the staff used their time to improve their skills on the boats.

It is of utmost importance that all our staff are trained and able to deal with any emergency situation out on the water (and on land come to that!). So Erin (our newest staff member) and scholars Rhu and Rachel were escorted by Tristan out to ‘Full Moon’ to perfect their skills before they can become fully fledged boat captains. The training involved pull starting the engines, “Man Overboard!!!” procedures, throwing buoyancy aids, getting an unconscious person onto the boat, picking up divers and practice in reversing the boat.

All 3 of them did very well, despite a few bruises here and there from putting in 100% effort…
Well done guys!

Gen (Punta Gruesa base manager)
