Lionfish safari

During one of the many non-diving days we went on a lionfish safari! Armed with our fins, mask and snorkel we ventured into the lagoon. Tristan, our lionfish-killing expert, was also armed with a spear gun and catching net. After a good hour we had found and caught five lionfish! They’re now in a bucket awaiting their fate - we may cook them (apparently they taste very good) or dissect them, just as we have done before (it is very interesting to see the stomach contents of the fish).

The reason we’re doing this is because the lionfish are an invasive species in the Caribbean, they reproduce very quickly and haven’t any natural predators here. We try to keep their numbers down like this, although their numbers are still growing.

I, personally, am waiting for the day that the lionfish go on a GVI-safari!
