NATIONAL DAY OF THE TREE!

In 1958 Mexican President Adolfo López Mateos established the second Thursday of July as the National Day of the Tree. One year after, in 1959, July was established as the Month of the Forest!

In the international arena, the International Forestry Congress chose the 28th of June as the International day of the tree. However, this hasn’t become entirely international as some countries celebrate it in different dates or not at all. Australia for instance celebrate it on the 30th of July and on the 1st of August.

Whichever day you celebrate it, it is a great excuse to plant a tree, to organize reforestations, rescue urban forests or just get together and increase the awareness of preserving the forests and discussing about the importance of the trees!

Even though our expeditions are mainly Marine related, we know we are part of a living system in which all the ecosystems relate and therefore the importance of contributing preservation of all of them! Here in Mexico, the Municipality of Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen) has organized a series of activities during July in which GVI staff will participate planting trees and spreading the word!!

We want to know your opinion! Why should we preserve the trees? AND
DO YOU KNOW WHICH IS THE SACRED MAYAN TREE?
