Week 5 in Pez Maya- Farming, farewells, welcomes & Cozumel diving

This week we added a new community project to our repertoire. A small group of us headed to an organic farm in order to help some local farmers make compost. We learned about organic vegetables and fruits and farming techniques while doing some manual labor which was rewarded by an excellent feast of homemade tamales. On top of this the locals tried to teach us some Mayan words while most of us barely know basic Spanish!

This weekend we said goodbye to 5-weekers Steph and Ryan. In honor of their departure, the 10-weekers took a trip off base for a long weekend to Playa del Carmen as the new 5-weekers were picked up from the airport and given their orientation back at base. Off base we enjoyed numerous meals containing meat, got some much needed shopping done and just chillaxed to the max!

As part of our trip, all of us took the ferry over to Cozumel in order to do some diving. The first dive was a deep dive along a reef wall with a dropoff of 100 meters at the bottom of the abyss. Although we didn’t go down to 100 meters, we went down to 20 meters and had an amazing dive, with excellent visibility and incredible swim-throughs. Our second dive was to a site called Paradise, and it was exactly that – crystal clear waters and an abundance of sea life!

Although the old 5-weekers will be missed, this upcoming week should be fun as the new 5-weekers settle in and become part of the Pez Maya life.
