Week 2 – It’s a washout!!

Thunder, Thunder, this is Pez Maya, Pez Maya do you copy…

Congratulations this week to all those who passed their Open Water and Advanced Open Water, despite our temperamental compressor. Rob’s impressive skills with duct tape saved the day, allowing us all to dive! Juvenile fish and algae tests are slowly being completed, and hopefully it won’t be long before we are all acing our spot dives and can start to monitor the reef. Congratulations also go to Huts 1 and 4 for being the first to receive a coveted Michelin Star. Hopefully it won’t be too long before each hut has earned one, meaning more and more inventive dishes to come.

Everyone has had to put their busy tanning schedule on hold this week as the thunder, lightning and rain well and truly hit Pez Maya! This rather unwelcome guest kept us all awake at night, fearing our tarp roofs would fly away, but it did however allow us all to have a good well needed shower! Disappointingly some dives had to be cancelled, but we’re all keeping our fingers crossed for glorious sunshine for the remainder of the expedition.
Competitiveness is in the air signalling the start of the Pez Maya Volleyball Tournament. Teams have been picked and the fixture list has been drawn up. We had a sneaky peek of the infamous GI Joe trophy, which everyone wants to win. No doubt it won’t be long before the dirty tactics surface, and the shy members of the group will become the dark horses of the competition. Obviously good luck to all teams, but GO TEAM 2!!!!! I’m sure by the first game some more inventive team names will have been chosen, and hopefully we won’t have to sensor any of them!

Spotted this week…. Turtles, stingrays, moray eels, banded coral shrimp and lobsters. Everyone is managing to put their studying to use by identifying fish and coral, which is becoming the main topic of conversation on base.

Our week rounded off with a trip to Chichen Itza for some whilst the remainder of the group had a well deserved lazy weekend, not involving much sleep, but watching the sunrise and an impromptu photo shoot. Again the staff made an amazing feast of home made burgers and chips. Yum yum!
