Shark Watch in Pez Maya!

Another blustery morning on base saw the EMs put through some Emergency First Response scenarios to test their first aid skills before being certified. Staff role played victims who had suffered terrible injuries during a boat push from hell – the captain had been thrown over the passenger bench, one crew member was running around in shock, another was under the boat and another had lost a leg in the propeller! With gallons of ketchup liberally spread around and hysterical screaming, EMs rushed to the scene. Unfortunately several of them forgot to assess the scene (important first step to protect yourself from becoming a victim) and were promptly bitten by the deadly weightbelt snake. Great fun training with a serious edge.

After, as two staff members made their way down to the water’s edge to rinse off the sand and ketchup, a cry of “shark, shark” was heard, just as one staff disappeared under a wave. Frantic screaming and waving soon saw him return to the safety of the beach to watch the large dorsal fin cruise back and forth in the breakers just in front of base. The shark has been sighted several times over the last couple of weeks - obviously it is enjoying some good hunting in the turbid waters over the sand bank. I think we’ll leave it to its hunting and try not to get made a meal of ourselves!
