Pulticub Beach Clean

As well as the monitoring of the reefs we also take part in other marine conservation activities. Beach cleans are just one of the many activities we contribute to. All expedition members took part in the Pulticub Beach clean which is situated 6 km away from the base. Everyone put a lot of effort into the day, working hard as the sun beat down upon them.

We arrived at the site at 10 am, and looked around the beautiful beach taking in the views. Everyone was shocked though to see the amount of discarded rubbish accumulating on the beach. We all got straight to work donning on our work gloves and dispersing into groups south and north of the beach. In order to keep the rubbish sorted in to its appropriate categories the teams split themselves in to glass and plastic collectors.

Everyone worked really hard and by lunch time had filled all the bags with rubbish. Hew had even collected plenty of huge ropes successfully after a tug of war episode pulling them up the beach. One expedition member even managed to fill a bag solely with shoes!By lunch time everyone was starving and so was rewarded with a picnic lunch on the new and improved clean beach. After this break everyone got back to work with a final sweep of the area. So much rubbish was collected it has taken several trips to dispose of it. This highly successful day collected more than 30 bags of plastic and glass.
