6th Marine Turtle Festival, a wet success!!

Despite the heavy rain that has been pouring down lately on the Yucatán Peninsula, the 6th edition of the Marine Turtle Festival was successful!

It started on Friday in Casa de la Cultura in Tulum with a Mayan ritual and a trip to see the murals that the children painted in town. At the same time there was an exposition featuring paintings and various environmental organizations which presented their contributions to Turtle conservation and the Environment.

Pez mayan Expedition Members organized very fun and creative Games such as abig puzzle and a labyrinth based on the Turtle cycle, its threats and conservation efforts.

In addition, staff from Xcaret and Xel-ha parks also organized environmental games. Expedition Members from Punta Gruesa also assisted and everyone had good fun! Unfortunately, later in the evening dances and music performances were cancelled due to the rain.

Saturday, the beach cleanup had a late start thanks to our hostess the rain, but fortunately it stopped long enough to let us continue with the program. More than 20 big bags of garbage were collected from a stretch of beach 3 kilometers long. 70% of the collected items were plastics that will be recycled. The kite and sand sculpture contests were also a big hit!

Afterwards, every Expedition member helped with the closing of the event in Xcacel, for which magically the sky cleared and a big rainbow appeared in the sky; it was a perfect setting for the show. It was a very touching performance about nesting and hatching that everyone enjoyed. Also, at the end of the event, every one of the nearly 500 assistants released a dream in the form of a white flower. 200 pre-selected kids each released a baby turtle.
