1st INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS IN TOURISM AND SEA TURTLE

In relation with the Marine Turtle Festival, the University of Quintana Roo (UQROO) and Comisión Nacional de Areas Protegidas (CONANP) organized the 1st Congress in Tourism and Marine Turtles in the Centre of Nature and Mayan Culture Interpretation in Tulum.

During the event, speakers from Mexico and Costa Rica presented interesting topics regarding the impact of tourism on turtle nesting beaches, the rapid development of Tulum as a tourist area, the role of government and their policies to protect turtles, turtle nesting preferences and ongoing research regarding its migration behavior. Also, there were presentations on successful initiatives regarding Ecotourism. For example, the projects that WIDECAST have in Costa Rica and the ones that some hotel owners like Nueva Vida de Ramiro and Cabañas Tulum carry out in Tulum during turtle nesting season.

Around 100 people attended the event including two GVI staff members, who enjoyed the insight they had into these issues and will be sharing this with the rest of the GVI Mexico team.
