Mangrove reforestation

Last Saturday, 5ht of July, a group of volunteers led by our partner associations CONANP, Amigos de Sian Ka'an and Flora, Fauna y Cultura, gathered at the Natural Protected Area of Nichupte (Cancun) to take part in one of the largest mangrove reforestation events ever organized in this region.

In total, 12000 plants of red mangrove (Rhizopora mangle) were planted by over 190 volunteers. Approximately, 3 hectares of dead mangrove were reforested.

Cancun, as the rest of the Q Roo coastline, has seen a massive decline in mangrove forest cover, due to uncontrolled coastal   development and the effect of hurricanes (Wilma and      Dean mainly).

We congratulate our partner organizations in the success of this event, and we wish lots of health to the newly planted little mangroves!
