Travesia Sagrada Maya

The Yucatan Peninsula, home to our Mexican expeditions, is also home to one of the oldest and more interesting ancient civilizations, the Mayans. Many books and studies have been published on the great feats of the Mayans, but one exemplifies the spirit of this great civilization: The Travesia Sagrada Maya (The Mayan Sacred Crossing)

In ancient times, local populations from Xcaret (south of Playa del Carmen), Cozumel and Playa del Carmen traveled from settlement to settlement to buy and sell products, as well as to take part in local traditions and festivities. This 50km long crossing was done by canoes.

With its first successful reenactment last year, local Eco-Cultural park Xcaret continues again this year in what is hoped to become an annual tradition commemorating this amazing event. You can see images and videos from last year's event at http://www.travesiasagradamaya.com.mx

This year, a team of friends, collaborators and advisors of Amigos de Sian Ka’an and GVI Mexico will venture into the ocean and attempt to complete the full Sacred Mayan Crossing, and at the same time aims to raise $10,000 for Amigos' marine programme.

Scientific research has always been the base of ASK conservations actions, and since 2003, thanks to an alliance with GVI, the coral reef research programme has been strengthened, increased and replicated in different areas. This collaboration has now proved invaluable and we have now gathered the most extensive database of its kind in the world.

Following the recent hurricane events in the Caribbean, it is necessary to evaluate the coral reef conditions in order to establish and promote conservation strategies and actions. In order to guarantee this vital monitoring programme, and as part of the International Year of the Reef, ASK and GVI are launching a donation campaign that aims to obtain $10,000. These funds will guaranteed this year's monitoring programme and the design of the necessary conservation strategies.
